Ceibo is an independent surf film that showcases women’s surfing and activism in Ecuador. I travelled over there in early 2024 with Pacha Light and Maddie Meddings. Pacha was born in the Ecuadorian Andes and lived for the first year of her life in a house completely off grid in the forest. After she moved to Australia with her mum in the early 2000s, she grew up to become a professional surfer.
Ceibo shares some of Pacha’s journey as she retraces her heritage in her birth country, learning about the small, beautiful South American country that has shaped so much of who she is.
I was also on my own journey of learning about Ecuador’s culture of activism, after a few hard fast years of advocating around gender equality, I was eager to learn more about different forms activism can take.
So Pacha and I went on this journey from the mountains to the Pacific Coastline, out to the Galapagos Islands and into the Amazon Rainforest. Maddie was behind the lens and together we created a surf film that is deep and powerful and shares some of our world’s most unique and precious landscapes.
Ceibo is making its global premiere in Sydney on April 8th, and will be in Byron Bay on April 13th where Pacha and I will join for panel discussion and Q and A.
