Last week, South Sydney dream-pop darlings Tuppaware Party played a stripped back gig at Newtown’s Route 66 store. Feeling like something straight out of Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the chic vintage store hosted a “try on” party of the complete CHILDE collection. Paired with a crisp can of Young Henrys, sans drums and guitar this time, Tuppaware was all vocals and all eyes were on Shelly Fitzpatrick.

In theme, Shelly sported denim dungarees and the aptly named CHILDE “Tuppaware” glasses in glossy Rose Vital, and took to gliding down the aisles of the flower children-esque dresses and cowboy boots. In typical style, a faux shyness was portrayed in her wavering and avoiding gaze but the intimacy of the show was still palpable as the warm afternoon brought with it a thirsty and curious crowd.

Wearing the winged ”Komodo” butterfly glasses Keva Wilson, the latest addition to Tuppaware Party was soft and sweet on the keys. It’s hard to imagine a time she wasn’t a solid member of the band. Smooth, synth vibes are what this band are built on. The long mic lead was a tested more and more as Shelly was feeling the tunes, sashaying in only socks. A whimsical and childish innocence always at the heart of both lyrics and performance.

Bass lines were slick, under the wide brim of a cream Akubra worn by bassist Karl Jorgensen. It was definitely a different take on the usual energy of the band and you could feel the crowd was getting a new appreciation for Shelly’s full and honeyed vocals. As the room filled out the music became a soothing soundtrack to Thursday beers and a good old rifle amongst the blue denim, suede and shades.
